can you choose a class or make moral decisions?

I was doing a bit of game library logistics and found out I have this game, for some reason. I don't know how it ended up in there, probably comes from some bundle or something... But whatever the case, how is the game for someone who has not read the books or watched the series? Will I be totally lost? Does the game follow the story of the books or is it some tangential storyline created for the game? Does the game spoil too much of the books, in case I eventually decide to read them?...

Just got past chapter 8. 15.6% of people get the achievement for getting halfway through the game (DLC not included). That seems pretty low to me. I take it a lot of people bought this because it's game of thrones but didn't actually like the game
