Visual Glitches
To get the elephant out of the room, yes I know this is the 2012 original version of Dear Esther, and yes I can easily play landmark edition and they are practically identical. But I got this version just so that I can experience the original source engine version to see how this would play in 2012 and look and feel truly rather than just watching a play through. Plus there are subtle differences in how the game plays and feels. Point is I don't want to argue about just playing landmark edition and want to fix some visual glitches for the og version I unfortunately have.

The first visual glitch I have is some, a decent amount, of candle sprites/particles appearing as black circles. The second one is how in the 4th map the water in the little pools looks white and bright including the water caustics. Also the distant clouds/fog have the same issue of appearing completely white rather than the subtle color they're supposed to be. And one of the stairs is just completely absent of lighting (fullbright.) It might be due to the specs of my computer (200$ laptop.) In other source games I have to put in launch parameters to get it graphically working such as L4D2 or black mesa. For BM I put in -force_vendor_id 0x10DE -force_device_id 0x1180 while in L4D2 I put in -force_vendor_id 0x10DE -force_device_id 0x0191. I’m not even sure what these do but they fix graphical issues for me. Maybe there is something like that for Dear Esther that can fix these graphical issues with the models and sprites. I’m assuming the game runs off a modified Portal 2 engine.

Nope, you are not imagining it. I also noticed small aberrations which are not there in Landmark Edition. I must say I was a bit weirded out when Landmark was given away in a month long giveaway, because I did feel the game was underappreciated by all the freebie downloaders slating it as "not a game"...but that's another topic entirely. :oldlighthouse:

Unfortunately I played both games through so many times, it would trigger a story analysis explosion in my head for me to go back and check the candles and stairs to make screenshots for this. But those 2 I do recall being less than perfect. But I was playing the game for what it was, and ever since I've become a Curator (check my profile) I've changed not only how I review, but how I play, and I've stopped looking for minor glitches in games lately. As a coder in a previous lifetime, I've never wanted to pick over tiny details. I also know how hard it becomes to fix any defect that is either stubborn or would require a complete re-build and a complete re-test, which these bugs kind of fall into that triage bucket, easy to fix, but incredibly risky that we break something else at the same time. :LightHouseCaligo:

However, for me, this is a seminal game in it's category, and perhaps just keeping it just as it was when it got released is a nod to the state of the art. Well spotted there @Jimmy McBeltBuckle . :woo_lighthouse:

I actually have screenshots no worries. I just assume there is some kind of parameter to these models or textures that are causing these visual glitches that my computer can't display the lighting of properly.

Note for the stairs it's not all the stairs but most of them that appear without lighting.

That is totally off-putting. I thought you were seeing small aberrations, those are huge issues with shaders or volumetric lighting/fog effects giving your graphics card the finger. I would be dropping it like a hot potato if a gem looked like that on my machine. I only have 2GB VRAM, and a older gpu, but I would be shelling out for a new bit of kit if I encountered that kind of problem often. Sorry.
