Magicka: Wizard Wars

Why did this game die?
We all love this game and we agree it was a great game. Indeed, it was one of the best games I've played in my entire life. But something must have gone wrong for it to die. So, in your opinion, what did developers do wrong that killed the game?

They didn't knew how to make a viable business model around an amazing awesome game. They should try again :3

The business model was fine, they even got ~$30 in microtransactions from me. It just wasn't hitting the huge profit goals the guys in suits were looking for so they shut it down.

If they wanted, they could have ceased development and still kept the servers up (there were only <4 servers anyway). See Funorb/Arcanists which was in a similar situation. Those guys only shut down their servers around 6 years after development for it was abandoned.

Well, free content, no pay to win.
Hmm... I don't think a game must be pay-to-win to be financially viable. Dota 2 is not pay-to-win, there are tons of free content, nevertheless it's one of the most financially successful game on Steam. I don't think this was the problem.

As soon as I remember, developers told us that there was not enough money to keep the servers running. So I don't think it was a greed issue, apparently they really broke.

I'd say it was a lack of exposure. Only things I saw for wizard wars were in magicka, once or twice in steam news and one humble E3 promo. Dota was established back in warcraft 3 and does events to remind people to try it. League was one of the first stand-alones made and had little competition for a long time+they made really good skins. Heroes of the storm being Blizzard is in a launcher with about 8 other games, so regular exposure. Etc. Loved Magicka, but kept forgetting wizard wars existed.

I believe a main issue was that the game was just too hard for most people. Especially when you first get started you'll never manage to actually use your spells in a planned way. To this day i can not convince even one friend of mine to play more than maybe an hour of Magicka 2 with me, due to them considering it too stressfull.

Online only games are always fated to die, and no'one is trying to stop it.
