I had the luxury of buying this on Steam before SEGA had decided to purge the only PC remaster of the Classic Sonic franchise at the time off the Steam store. Just so they can sell the overpriced garbage known as Sonic Origins. Anyway SEGA hate aside, this is a good remaster it improves upon the original and expands on it's ideas while also staying true to it. It allows you to replay the game, but also enjoy it in a high quality way I would say.


The gameplay is your average classic Sonic platform-er. Basically finish the stage, collect rings, defeat the boss and progress. Also collect magic rocks to get the good ending! It's basically Sonic CD, but in 16:9 widescreen ratio and in HD. The remaster adds some improvements. Like fixing the dreaded awful spin-dash of the original game, and replacing it with the Sonic 2-3 spin-dash. Worry not Sonic CD spin-dash enjoyers! All 3 of you, there's an option in the menu to switch the original CD if you're sociopath enough to actually prefer that over the original spin-dash from Sonic 2! Speaking of menu, you also have save files meaning if you actually have a life can't afford to finish the game in one sitting. Which is neat. The menu also gives you an option to switch soundtracks. Incase, you aren't in the know Sonic CD has to separate soundtracks; one for the U.S. release, and the other for the Japanese release. So, if you prefer one, or the other you can choose which one you wanna hear.


As mentioned before, two soundtracks. I like both to be honest. Wacky Workbench Past, and Metal Sonic's theme (the U.S. one) are my favorites.


The difficulty is virtually non-existent. Now it isn't a walk in the park because even in my first playthrough I have died a few times. Sonic games aren't the type of game to play if you want difficulty - they are mostly about being fast-paced, and beating the level as fast as you can. Really, anyone can pick up a Sonic game and beat it. However it isn't challenge free though.


The story is very straight forward: Dr.Robotnik takes over a little planet, and Metal Sonic kidnaps Amy Rose! Sonic has to collect all the time stones (or destory the generators) to defeat Robotnik and Metal Sonic - so he can save the planet and Amy! Simple. Not much depth here for me to analyze.


Sure, this game isn't Sonic 2-3 levels of fun. I'd argue it's even weaker than Sonic 1 mostly because Sonic 1 had a certain charm to it. However, I still enjoy the game. Compared to a lot of modern trash SEGA puts out these days Sonic CD is a masterpiece in comparison. Sure, (if you ignore the game gear games) Sonic CD is the weakest Classic Sonic game. However, it isn't bad, I say it's enjoyable. I can pick up this game and beat it without any issues.

i'll be honest i actually kind of hate playing this game but it's hard to give it a bad review. i like the idea of playing it more than actually playing it.
