In Daytona USA, for example, the damage would slow you down, so you had to go to the pit stop to get the car fixed. It was part of the gameplay. The crashes were also spectacular and quite common, also because of the number of cars on the screen.
Yes, there are some impressive accidents in real rally racing as well, but I don't think they make sense in an arcade game.
