The higher-tech products will now need to be researched before production can start, and most will award a 5-year patent. During these years, the inventor will have exclusive manufacturing rights. Once the patent expires, other corporations can start production and local vendors will slowly start their own production and increase their quality over time. Most researchable products are not available from game start, but will appear over time.
This will, in the next update, be extended with additional products, longer patents, licensing and trade in patents.
