There is no manual save but the game will save all progress automatically, including words guessed, items acquired, NPCs visited etc. It will also store your most recent save location (generally the last altar you visited) and start you at that position when you next play the game.

Thank you for the reply. I had just talked with the first rat NPC in the Bonehouse, and decided I wanted to try saving through the options menu.. To test if it worked, I closed and loaded the game back up but it put me a few rooms behind (the hallway with the mushrooms), so that is why I was confused.

Ah yes, sorry for the confusion - it will have dropped you back at the level entrance but all your other save data should be just as you left it when you closed.
