[Spoilers] Ending story discussion.
So after finishing the current story, we never really get an explanation for how the Devout came to be or what exactly started the movement?
We get that the movement started the end of the Empire but not exactly what prompted this sudden shift, or maybe I somehow missed that.
I initially thought it had something to do with that information hazard that was hinted at that start wrecking your ship, then I thought since they used no tech storage I assumed it might some kind of malevolent AI but nothing came of it?
Since the pyramids seemed to be some kind of information storage to preserve tech, at least
that was the initial impression but later on the crew comment that might not be the true reason.
The talonian was interesting but I wish it had more to say especially for why it was deactivated it if was supposed to oversee the return of the generation ship.
The tech tree contains one final secret research that I never unlocked right at the bottom, was there something I missed or is that currently a place holder?

Just finished the game and right after that I red all the log messages about Remnants and Arkadians, so I could have a better understanding of the game lore.
I may be wrong, but my best shot at this is this:

The story starts in the universe of Starcom Nexus, where part of the people were enclosed in "paradise", and the rest were oppresed by Sentinels. Those oppresed by Sentinels started some genetical experiments, so Sentinels would not consider them enemies - that is how other races came to be. Most of Starcom humans decided to leave that galaxy, because they couldn't cope with the threat. That is how Remnants came to be "Remnants of what is left of Starcom people after fights with Sentinels". That is also the time where Chariots, Arks, Starlance and Talonians came to be. All those things were just means to achieve the goal - running away from the strong threat. I think they have created what they could to proceed with the task at hand, the result was 10 Chariots along with Arks (and Talonians). By the way to achieve such technological feat they had to interface a human with machine, because normal human could not understand and operate a Chariot (and bend the laws of nature), that is how Talonians came to be, they are more or less an interface between human and machine. The whole process of running away required a Starlance with a special sun, which was depleted of energy in the process of opening a gateway to another galaxy (time ?). Remnants found the right sun, but it also happend that pre-industrial civilization (Arkadians) was on the planet near that sun. Remnants didn't want to repeat the wrongdoings of the people left in the "paradise", hence they decided to create yet 2 more Arks and Chariots for them. Finally they managed to start the journey to a new place. In the meantime Arkadians on one Chariot wanted to return back. Talonian, even though understood their yearning for return, he (she ?) couldn't fullfil that desire because he was programmed not to disobey his creators, however he decided to teach them technology. They learned fast, and at some point they thought that disabling "waves" on the ship was a way to stop the Chariot and turn it back, however they were very wrong. "Waves" kept the ship togeother and once turned off the result was a destroyed (other Chariot went missing along with the Ark - that is the Ark we find behind the Singularity). That was around the time were the Empire was established. Initially Remnants were part of the Empire and passed their story about "paradise", so there is no one to follow it, but there were multiple factions/races that had a different understanding of how things should be. For example maybe Devout were the race that was scared very much with the destruction of Chariot (by beings with unsatiated academic thirst), so that is why the hatred for Academics/Heretics began. Devout main point (in the beggining at least), was to tread very carefully with technological advancements, so a disater like Chariot destruction could be avoided in the future, part of them also yearned for the mythical "paradise" wonders, and abused the initial fear and turned it into opressive religion. Before that hatred escalated Remnants decided to move on, and just flee away to yet another Galaxy. Chariots disappeared along with the fantastic power of Talonians, Remnants boarded Arks yet one more time and dissapeared from this universe. In the power void a lot of animosities stared and along with it the slow downfall of Empire. Pyramids were just a mean to slow down that downfall - Arkadians (and other new races) wanted to understand how to grasp the power that only Talonian could wield, but failed to fully comprehand it because they were much simpler beings than Talonians after all. Fast forward 800 years and something (most likely Devout research) opens the wormhole to the Human universe. Humans decide to establish the Celano base in the universe.

This is when the game starts, and the rest of the story are the adventures of The Explorer.

As for the final research - it is only to see experimental ship parts that didn't end up in the final game - it can be unlocked by some console code.
Meh, I got a completly different understanding.
After the events of unknown universe, humanity recovered survey data about the Talonian and tryed to retoengineer it, thus creating the problematic AI of Nexus.

Talonians are far superior to anything in the first game.

The way I see it, talonians chaperone a "worty" ethnic group to a fresh new universe that they will seed.
After a while, and after the bad have accomplished its doing (corruption, greed, pride...), talonian pick a new "worthy" group among the children of that new universe, and start over in a new one, while letting the previously abandonned one tear itself appart.

This way, the talonians get lo exist infinitly and forever increase their power, while always being worshiped by replacable subjects, thankful of the opportunity offered to them.
