What has been updated (and when?) that forced nearly all players (I remember seeing specialized servers for one map only) to stop playing this game?

I have been playing since the early 2010 and It is a shame that this game is slowly rotting to lowering player counts in the recent year. I remember the glory days of having 24/7 maps and having a minimum of 3 full servers constantly. Yet, this is no longer the case, ZPS is digging its early grave since it does not have a strong economic model to continue promoting its longevity as a game for future generations to play.
