(IMPORTANT) Read this if Riven crashes!
INTERMITTENT CRASHES IN VR:

CRASHING ON STARTUP: If you’re on a windows machine, specific CPUs have a hardware issue that cause a crash on startup or between loads. You can find more information on it here, in addition to workarounds: https://cyan.com/docs/riven-launches-but-closes-never-gets-to-the-menu-sometimes-shows-an-error-message/

“RAD has become aware of a problem that can cause Oodle Data decompression failures, or crashes in games built with Unreal. We believe that this is a hardware problem which affects primarily Intel 13900K and 14900K processors, less likely 13700, 14700 and other related processors as well. Only a small fraction of those processors will exhibit this behavior. The problem seems to be caused by a combination of BIOS settings and the high clock rates and power usage of these processors, leading to system instability and unpredictable behavior under heavy load.”

Unfortunately, this isn’t anything Cyan can fix on our end. You may have even encountered this in other games made with Unreal Engine 5. It’s about how your CPU interacts with software a part of Unreal, and as noted in links in the FAQ, Epic Games is aware of the issue and can only suggest the workarounds as the solve for this at this time.

If you are unsatisfied with the workarounds, please reach out to your hardware manufacturer and Epic Games.

APP HANGS ON STARTUP: If you are experiencing a crash or hang on startup outside of the scenario described above, and if you have a customized or older VR setup with options you can't recall whether or not you've turned on or off, please disable the "motion compensation layer" in your OpenXR backend settings. Yes, this applies to the game running in 2D mode as well. This appears to be an engine bug prevalent in our version of Unreal.

(Mac Only): We require MacOS 14.5 and Apple Silicon to play Riven. If you are on an Intel Mac, or on a MacOS version lower than 14.5, the game will not run and may crash on startup with an OS-level message. These requirements are listed in the system requirements on our store page.

If None of the above solutions resolve the issue, please contact us using the instructions found here: https://gtm.you1.cn/app/1712350/discussions/0/4340987401314318171/

Wait, so you're saying a 4000$ PC is incompatible with the game because of some exotic issue with a component used during game development and we either have to downclock hardware (as said in the article) or wait until RAD, who has no economic interest in doing anything about it, decides to fix it?

Beats me :\ I genuinely don't understand at a fundamental level why this isn't something that can be fixed by Epic or Rad or Intel (seems like Rad is pointing the finger at Intel), but it's unfortunately completely out of our control.

I read a bit into it and the problem is not new. There is an exhaustive article about it on Toms Hardware from Feb 23 (https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/is-your-intel-core-i9-13900k-crashing-in-games-your-motherboard-bios-settings-may-be-to-blame-other-high-end-intel-cpus-also-affected)

In that article, the author says "our GPU reviewer has been dealing with the matter over the past year", so it is at least a year old.

As for the blame game, Epic/RAD says: "It seems that many motherboard/BIOS manufacturers are shipping with settings that push the processor outside its safe operating range." which means "not our fault".
Intel says: "Intel is aware of reports regarding Intel Core 13th and 14th Gen unlocked desktop processors experiencing issues with certain workloads. We’re engaged with our partners and are conducting analysis of the reported issues." which is a glorified "we actually don't care lol"

Players have 2 options:
- go to BIOS and fiddle with your voltage settings, which can rekt your system if you don't know what you're doing
- refund the game

I don't know what else to tell you, unfortunately :\ you decide which route you'd like to go. Cyan is unable to address the issue.

Thank you for posting about it, I'm having this issue, and unfortunately the game won't load. I hope it will be resolved eventually, and I hope you will notify us when it will. Thanks!

I hope so too. If you're brave enough to try, you can take a look at the BIOS workarounds they suggest!
This has been a running issue with games lately, but it's fixed by bios updates. MSI has released a few in the past few months that address this. I've had no issues since then.

I got a Solution to Work for me, ONLY TESTED WITH THESE SPECIFIC SPECS

Specs:
CPU: i9 14900K

Motherboard: MAG Z790-TOMAHAWK-WIFI (shows as MS-7D91 in dxdiag)

First you must update your Bios to Version 7D91vHB (Release Date 2024-04-24)
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MAG-Z790-TOMAHAWK-WIFI/support

Then follow the tutorial on how to update your BIOS (USB DRIVE REQUIRED)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKMub20CUNI&feature=youtu.be

New bios in dxiag should show H.B0

After this install Process Lasso
https://bitsum.com/

Launch Process Lasso

Go to Options > CPU > CPU AFFINITIES

Under Process match type "Riven.exe" (no quotes)

Select CPU Affinity and select "STAGGERED"

Press Add Rule

Press Ok to close

Launch the game like normal and it should run.

Game runs but is mostly stable

I would have preferred that you let the demo available,
It would give me time to test different parameters to make the game stable before buying.

I have a 14900K and also experienced the same issue. The crash dialog pops up after the Cyan logo animation:

"Fatal error: [File:I:\AltWorkspace\Engine\Source\Runtime\RenderCore\Private\ShaderCodeArchive.cpp] [Line: 367]
ShaderCodeArchive::DecompressShader(): Could not decompress shader with Oodle"

However, I was able to get around this issue by running Riven-Win64-Shipping.exe in the \common\Riven_2023\Riven\Binaries\Win64 outside of Steam.

Intro: https://i.imgur.com/TNNqhdf.jpeg
Arriving at Riven: https://i.imgur.com/5QaT9UU.jpeg (with crash message)

Unfortunately, the moment I arrive at Riven, the game crashes:

"Fatal error: [File:l:AltWorkspace\Engine\Source\Runtime\PakFile\Private\IPlatformFilePak.cpp] [Line: 4265]
Retry was NOT successful."

---------------------------

Regarding my motherboard, I have an ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero. In the BIOS, I've set PL1 and PL2 to 175. Amps are set to Intel's spec of 400.

And for the CPU I've lowered the voltage to -0.90 in the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and set all Performance Per-Core Tuning values to 55x.

I lowered the wattage, voltage, amps, and performance within Intel's designated CPU and motherboard specs. It runs at a stable 50-60 degrees Celsius during games. I'm seeing 4K 120 FPS in Ghost of Tsushima with the above adjustments.

Despite correcting the issues on the motherboard side and also on the CPU side using Intel's app, Riven still crashes after the Cyan logo (if I launch from Steam) or when I visit Riven (if I run the .exe file outside of Steam).

I suffer from this issue but didn't have any problems running the demo on the same machine??? 🤔
Itchy 27 Jun, 2024 @ 11:20am
ok i managed to fix it. I can play now :-) All i did was update my bios to the latest version here https://rog.asus.com/motherboards/rog-maximus/rog-maximus-z790-formula/helpdesk_bios/

Then in bios, i reset all settings to default by pressing F5 (before had AI Overclocking enabled)

(Didn't need to use lasso)

My spec:

Asus Rog Maximus Z790 Formula
Core-i9 14900k

Are you referring to the AI Overclock Tuner under the Extreme Tweaker menu link?
