Report a translation problem
I read a bit into it and the problem is not new. There is an exhaustive article about it on Toms Hardware from Feb 23 (https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/cpus/is-your-intel-core-i9-13900k-crashing-in-games-your-motherboard-bios-settings-may-be-to-blame-other-high-end-intel-cpus-also-affected)
In that article, the author says "our GPU reviewer has been dealing with the matter over the past year", so it is at least a year old.
As for the blame game, Epic/RAD says: "It seems that many motherboard/BIOS manufacturers are shipping with settings that push the processor outside its safe operating range." which means "not our fault".
Intel says: "Intel is aware of reports regarding Intel Core 13th and 14th Gen unlocked desktop processors experiencing issues with certain workloads. We’re engaged with our partners and are conducting analysis of the reported issues." which is a glorified "we actually don't care lol"
Players have 2 options:
- go to BIOS and fiddle with your voltage settings, which can rekt your system if you don't know what you're doing
- refund the game
Specs:
CPU: i9 14900K
Motherboard: MAG Z790-TOMAHAWK-WIFI (shows as MS-7D91 in dxdiag)
First you must update your Bios to Version 7D91vHB (Release Date 2024-04-24)
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MAG-Z790-TOMAHAWK-WIFI/support
Then follow the tutorial on how to update your BIOS (USB DRIVE REQUIRED)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKMub20CUNI&feature=youtu.be
New bios in dxiag should show H.B0
After this install Process Lasso
https://bitsum.com/
Launch Process Lasso
Go to Options > CPU > CPU AFFINITIES
Under Process match type "Riven.exe" (no quotes)
Select CPU Affinity and select "STAGGERED"
Press Add Rule
Press Ok to close
Launch the game like normal and it should run.
Game runs but is mostly stable
It would give me time to test different parameters to make the game stable before buying.
"Fatal error: [File:I:\AltWorkspace\Engine\Source\Runtime\RenderCore\Private\ShaderCodeArchive.cpp] [Line: 367]
ShaderCodeArchive::DecompressShader(): Could not decompress shader with Oodle"
However, I was able to get around this issue by running Riven-Win64-Shipping.exe in the \common\Riven_2023\Riven\Binaries\Win64 outside of Steam.

Arriving at Riven: https://i.imgur.com/5QaT9UU.jpeg (with crash message)
Unfortunately, the moment I arrive at Riven, the game crashes:
"Fatal error: [File:l:AltWorkspace\Engine\Source\Runtime\PakFile\Private\IPlatformFilePak.cpp] [Line: 4265]
Retry was NOT successful."
---------------------------
Regarding my motherboard, I have an ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero. In the BIOS, I've set PL1 and PL2 to 175. Amps are set to Intel's spec of 400.
And for the CPU I've lowered the voltage to -0.90 in the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and set all Performance Per-Core Tuning values to 55x.
I lowered the wattage, voltage, amps, and performance within Intel's designated CPU and motherboard specs. It runs at a stable 50-60 degrees Celsius during games. I'm seeing 4K 120 FPS in Ghost of Tsushima with the above adjustments.
Despite correcting the issues on the motherboard side and also on the CPU side using Intel's app, Riven still crashes after the Cyan logo (if I launch from Steam) or when I visit Riven (if I run the .exe file outside of Steam).
Then in bios, i reset all settings to default by pressing F5 (before had AI Overclocking enabled)
(Didn't need to use lasso)
My spec:
Asus Rog Maximus Z790 Formula
Core-i9 14900k
I have a similar spec:
ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero
Core-i9 14900k
Are you referring to the AI Overclock Tuner under the Extreme Tweaker menu link?
Yes that's it
