what do each of the 'special' weapon upgrades actually do?
it's pretty damn stupid that I have to BUY these expensive upgrades before I can even know what their abilities are.
does anybody happen to know the features of each and every special upgrade?

I don't remember off the cuff what each does but each upgrade part comes with a free power node so that is value in itself.

LOL, just read the description on each special node. If you can use a forum, you can do that much on your own! :steamfacepalm:

are the special nodes visible when I haven't bought them yet?

Even if the specal upgrade is underwhelming for your playstile it's absolutely worth it to get the specal upgrade units as not only do you get the power node but you expand the wepons upgrade paths for more damage fire rate capacity etc...

The slots for the special upgrades only become visible once you've upgraded that weapon to a certain point, and then it will also describe what the special feature is.
