Darkstalkers 1.... oof...
I'd never really gotten into the series before - I had attempted to in the past, but it's juuuust obtuse enough & when I go searching online most places are gabbing about lore than posting the sorts of tutorials I see for something like Guilty Gear.

I've been practising enough that I made it through the basic roster on default settings in Arcade mode without any continues or saves, but then Pyron shows up and the experience is just absolutely evaporating the wind from my sails.

Is there any sort of established guide for making it through this un-fun hell?

If you definition of fun is winning you should not be playing fighting games

A lot of final bosses in fighting games on default diffiulty during that period were really brutal, as arcades made money through milking players of quarters.

While the first Darkstalkers is good, it's Vampire Hunter and (especially) Vampire Savior that are really loved by the fans. You can ignore Vampire Hunter 2 and Savior 2, as they are both just revisions of Savior that are widely considered inferior to it.
