Late reply, but it's "supporter content" (which can be disabled supposedly, I've not tried it out so not sure if it actually does make the cans disappear in-game or not). It's for the people who support the dev through patreon. They have a few games with collectables like that, though different items (stickers, cards, etc). There is no point to them story-wise.
