Veil of the Witch Early Access 10-Day Recap – Your Feedback Matters

Hello! I’m Jin Sang Kim, the Creative Director responsible for the development of Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch.

First and foremost, I’d like to extend my gratitude to all of you who purchased and played the Early Access version of the game!

It’s been just over a week since we launched Early Access. As a fan and developer of turn-based strategy RPGs myself, I’ve put great effort into adding another engaging game franchise for fans of the genre. While perfection is difficult to achieve, our goal with this Early Access is to share the core gameplay and gather feedback so we can launch the full release as a more polished game.

Over the past 10 days, we've received incredible feedback with many unique ideas that we hadn’t considered. We’re carefully reviewing all of these, discussing them within our team, and outlining future development plans.

Today, I’d like to share some updates on what our team is currently prioritizing and planning. I wish I could provide more information on content development plans, but we’re focusing on addressing your feedback first. We expect to share our content roadmap in early December once our plans are finalized. But as many of you have asked about content plans, I’ll briefly touch on what’s in store.

For game improvements, we’ve divided our update plans into short-term, mid-term, and long-term categories leading up to the full release.

Please note: The following items are those we’ve already decided to work on based on internal review. If your suggestion isn't listed, it doesn't mean we haven't reviewed your feedback or aren't considering it.

Short-term Updates – Early December 2024

UI/UX/Control Improvements

4x Speed Option: We plan to add a 4x speed option to enable faster animation without entirely skipping enemy turns.
Character Stats Information: We’re improving the information on how character stat enhancements impact gameplay by providing more detailed descriptions on each stat during level-ups.
Unified and Customizable Hotkeys: Hotkeys, which currently vary by character because certain characters don’t have magic, will be standardized. We’ll also support custom hotkey assignments.
Quick Info for Combat Skills/Spells: We’re adding a quick info option to view layman version of combat skills and magic, on top of the existing Tactician’s detailed view currently accessible with by tapping "C."
Display Enemy Movement Range (F key): Instead of pressing "F" repeatedly to check enemy movement ranges, we’ll add an option to keep this range always visible.
Streamlined Battle Result Screen: We’ll simplify post-battle screens, eliminating separate screens for each reward type.
Steam Deck Improvements: We’re addressing Steam Deck display issues like cropped skill descriptions at 1280 x 800 resolution, as well as continuing with optimization for the Steam Deck.
Battle Dialogue Skip Option: The option to automatically skip previously viewed dialogues during battle already exists in-game. However, the translation for the option is incorrect and will be corrected for non-Korean languages.
End Credit: Currently, credits roll after completing Act 3. We’ll limit this to the first Act 3 completion.
Camera Zoom In/Out Feature: We’re adding a camera zoom function.
Available Combat Skills/Magic Display: Currently, it requires multiple clicks to check any given character’s skills/spells. Instead of navigating menus, we’ll show available combat skills and spells directly when selecting a character.
Promotion Rune Requirements: Rune requirements for promotions are currently not seen prior to the promotion. We’ll show the requirements in the UI so you can see unmet conditions upon clicking the promotion button.

Gameplay Adjustments

Tree of Life Skill Adjustment: We’re considering increasing the AoE damage, which is currently underpowered.
Balance Adjustment for Act 2 Boss: Based on feedback that the Act 2 boss is harder than Act 3’s, we’ll lower the shield and review other balance factors if needed.
Balance Adjustment for Temporary Allies: We’ll balance allies met in Acts 2 and 3, whose level is currently set too low for the battles in later acts.

Permanent Growth Adjustments

Altar of Fire Progression Rate: We’ll increase the number of Embers given out during an expedition to enhance the progression speed, addressing feedback that progress is too slow.

Mid-term Updates – January to February 2025

UI/UX/Control Improvements

WASD Camera Controls: We’ll support keyboard shortcuts for camera movement/panning, as some users find the current control scheme with camera movement and unit selection uncomfortable.
Enhanced Resonance Stone UI: We’ll improve the Resonance Stone UI so you can preview upgrade outcomes before selecting equipment for enchantment.
Improved Undo Feature: To make it easier to restart from the beginning of a battle, we’ll add a button for this purpose.
Character Stats Animation Skip Function: We’ll add a skip option for the post-battle stat screen animation.

Gameplay Adjustments

Improved Blessings Path: We’re reviewing ways to extend the duration of temporary blessings obtained through expedition, potentially making them last for an entire act or expedition. We will share more information about this in the future, after we assess its impact to the overall game.

Permanent Growth Adjustments

Greater Blessings from Altar of Fire: We’ll review and rebalance Greater Blessings, add more options, and avoid duplicates to encourage strategic variety.
Relic Unlock Display: We’ll add a UI feature to show relic unlock progression.
Partnership Level Balance: We’ll continue reviewing feedback on the progression rate and rewards for partnerships and adjust as needed. The feature is not yet complete, and we are hoping to make it more interesting with player feedback.

Long-term Updates – Before Full Release

UI/UX/Control Improvements

Steam Deck Optimization: We’ll continue optimizing the Steam Deck experience before launch.
Expedition Progress Information: We’ll add a map indicator for the last three stages before boss fights to help players prepare for boss encounters.

Gameplay Adjustments

More Simple Combat Types: To address long battle sequences, we’ll add shorter battle types to Act 1.
More Spellcaster Enemies: We’ve received feedback that the Magic Defense stat is less effective due to there being not too many enemies that use spells for primary attack. We are considering combat design level changes, like adding combat scenarios where there are multiple spellcasters in the enemy mix.
Addition of Mythic Skills: We’re considering adding new skills for accessories and potentially developing more Mythic skills before launch.

Permanent Growth Adjustments

Altar of Fire Enhancements: We’re planning to expand Altar of Fire options when “Trials Mode” is introduced, allowing more growth choices with varying levels of difficulty from Trials mode.

So there you have it—the above are what we’re prioritizing in terms of feedback-based improvements. However, please note that some feedback will require additional time or re-evaluation after content updates, which leads me to share the major content plans as below.

Major Content before Full Release

Trials Mode: Inspired by the Ascension system in Slay the Spire, players will be able to customize the difficulty. However, the execution will be done in the style of Hades in which you set the conditions of the challenge rather than be bound to the tiered difficulty levels. We hope to release this by February or March 2025.
Additional Battles: This is the most development-heavy task in terms of time. So we plan to first develop simpler battles and implement their variations that can be in the earlier part of an expedition, after first working on the Trials mode. We will then add two boss battle types for each Act, alongside the early simple battles. We will continue to discuss adding different types of battles for the game’s official release (different gimmicks, topography, etc.), but the two tasks above will be our highest priority and focus. And of course, we can work on more battles post official release if resources allow.
Items & Accessories Systems: We’re working on an item system (consumables that do not take the entire turn) and accessory system (new equipment type) to add strategic variety in combat. These systems will likely come with the release of Trials mode.
Final Boss Encounter: We’ll add a final boss fight that will require specific conditions to access, with the official release. As this needs to present the most epic-feeling battle experience, we will be taking utmost care in development.
Story and Voice Acting: We’re aware that the story currently ends a bit abruptly but rest assured that we’re investing in the story progression and will continue to update the story as we near official release. We will update everyone on the story and voice acting timelines soon.

We’ll share the full roadmap with the schedule as soon as possible!
We are committed to developing a quality game that resonates with turn-based RPG fans. We’re reviewing every piece of feedback, even if it doesn’t lead to immediate decisions. So please keep the feedback coming, and we’ll stay connected and keep the conversation and actions going!

We know many of you have been eagerly awaiting this day. Whether you became fans of our first game, Lost Eidolons, demoed the game at some live events like Gamescom or PAX, or just recently discovered us during last month’s Steam Next Fest, your support has brought us to this exciting moment: the Early Access launch of Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch!

Our team of nine developers are die-hard fans of turn-based strategy games and consider it an honor and a privilege to be able to expand the Lost Eidolons franchise. This time, we've built on the foundation of a turn-based tactical RPG and added a roguelite twist to keep gameplay fresh and engaging!

Through closed betas and multiple demos, we’ve gathered valuable feedback from you, our community, which have guided us in refining the game. Dev Log: Journey to Early Access

Hello, this is the development team behind Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch.

Only four days left until the Early Access launch!

After the release of our first game, Lost Eidolons, we received a wide range of feedback, which led us to reflect deeply. Although everyone on the development team poured their passion into the game, we recognized that our lack of experience with story-based, turn-based RPGs led us to overlook some aspects. Through feedback on areas that needed improvement, as well as positive responses to the combat mechanics, we gained an opportunity to internally assess how we can develop even more engaging and enjoyable turn-based strategy RPGs in the future.

After much consideration, we decided to work on Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch. And before the launch of Early Access, we’d like to take this time to briefly share our vision for the game and the improvements we’ve made based on the valuable feedback from various tests we conducted.

[The Vision for [i]Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch[/i]]

Veil of the Witch is a spin-off, not a sequel, to the original Lost Eidolons. While we haven’t yet decided on developing a full sequel, we hope to showcase the future potential of the Lost Eidolons franchise with this spin-off.

The vision for Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch is as follows:

Primary Goal: Offer strategic depth and enjoyment in grid-based turn-based combat.
Second Goal: Provide faster character growth and quicker battles compared to other turn-based RPGs.
Third Goal: Continuously deliver fresh experiences with each playthrough (expedition).
Fourth Goal: Present a captivating story within the Lost Eidolons world.

To achieve these goals, we’ve incorporated “roguelite elements” into this game. These features allow characters to grow rapidly within a single expedition, with each character gaining unique skills and stats along the way. The ever-changing battle scenarios add a strategic layer that keeps combat fresh and engaging. With the choice to create a five-person team from a roster of nine characters, various upgrades, and class changes, players will experience a wide variety of strategic choices.

We set out to tackle the common issues of repetition in grid-based turn-based RPGs, where lengthy battles, rigid growth patterns, and repetitive combat can limit replayability. By incorporating roguelite elements and emphasizing diverse battle scenarios, we aim to overcome these challenges. We hope you’ll give the game a try and share your feedback with us!

[Our Development Journey up to Early Access]

Since introducing the project in September 2023, we’ve dedicated our efforts to development, testing, and refining the game based on player feedback. We held two internal tests in March and April 2024, followed by a Friends and Family test in May, and our first official closed beta in July. Each of these tests provided valuable feedback that guided improvements. We also hosted demo sessions at Gamescom in August and PAX West in September, and received additional insights from participants in Steam Next Fest this October.

Throughout this journey, we gathered valuable feedback that we incorporated into the game, leading to steadily improving survey results. Notably, our scores for combat enjoyment and turn-based RPG satisfaction rose from the 7s to an impressive 8.57 and 8.91, respectively.

#1 The Altar of Fire

One consistently received feedback was that the Altar of Fire’s upgrade options felt too simple and lacked impact. In response, we’ve modified the Altar of Fire as shown below and will continue updating it based on feedback.

#2 UI/UX Improvements

We’ve made extensive UI/UX improvements. Negative feedback significantly decreased since the closed beta, and we’ll continue to enhance quality-of-life improvements based on user feedback.

For example, we are implementing quality-of-life improvements, such as enhancing the visibility of interactive objects below.

Also, improvements under development, expected to be added during or after EA, include:

Addition of an End Turn hotkey.
Addition of a button to move back to the furthest point when using Undo
Controller improvements at crossroads.
Better explanations for stat points awarded upon leveling up.
Improved display and visibility for character status effects.
And more to come…

#3 Combat Balance Improvements

We are satisfied with the general combat balance. However, based on recent feedback from Steam Next Fest, we plan to adjust Elena's trap skill by adding extra damage while keeping the current usage format.

Other Feedbacks

We also received feedback on aspects such as voice acting, the balance of relics, and difficulty levels. The good news is that we have plans to add voice acting before the official release. As for the feedback regarding relic balance and difficulty, we’ll monitor these elements during Early Access and make further adjustments based on player input.

[Post-Early Access Journey]

The primary goal of Early Access is to focus on detailed game balance and UI/UX improvements based on player feedback. We’re committed to enhancing our development capabilities as a turn-based RPG team, and we greatly appreciate the insights from genre fans that help us refine the game.

Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch Early Access Available Now

The wait is over. We are finally announcing our Early Access launch date and it’s right around the corner–November 5, 2024!

For the first time, our feature-complete game will be available for you to enjoy, from Act 1 all the way to the end of Act 3. Journey deeper into the forsaken island of Anareios, face increasingly challenging enemies, and take on two more bosses to get closer to uncovering the mystery.

While the full story will be revealed at the Official Release (within next year), all the core gameplay mechanics and systems will be available with the EA launch and expanded during the EA period. Be on the lookout for more info on this as we near November 5th.

Improving Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch

Hello,

This is Jin Sang Kim, the creative director of Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch. I am very excited to present a demo of our game just in time for the Turn-based RPG Fest, as we get ready to launch into Early Access.

After showcasing a prototype of the game at PAX West last September we conducted two internal company-wide tests, a Friends and Family test, first official closed beta test in July, and a demo just last August. With each test we ran a survey and gathered valuable feedback from the testers, and implemented various improvements, ranging from quality-of-life updates to significant changes in game balance, music, and art style. All based on the feedback.

The feedback from everyone has been incredibly helpful in refining and improving the game, and we’ve worked to reflect as much of your thoughts as possible for this demo, now open to turn-based RPG fans.

Let me briefly explain the history of our development, the improvements we made for this demo, and the ongoing work that has yet to be implemented.

1. Improvements In This Demo

After going through the closed beta and demo tests in July and August, here are some key changes we made:

[Quality of Life Improvements]
There's been significant improvements to various UI/UX inconveniences. For example, we adjusted the text speed after receiving feedback that it was too slow. Repetitive text during battle now automatically skips after the first encounter. We also improved the UI for Resonance Stones to enhance player understanding of the system. These, along with other UI/UX changes, make the game more user-friendly and easier to navigate.

[BGM Improvements]
We received feedback that the music didn’t match the game, so we contracted Clark, the composer of our first game, Lost Eidolons, to remake the original BGM in a new style. We also added newly composed tracks to fit the game’s tone.

[Prologue/Tutorial Improvements]
We improved the prologue to give more context to the main protagonist's predicament at the start of the game. The tutorial has been streamlined to focus on essentials while ensuring that players still learn the necessary mechanics.

[Portrait Art Style Improvements]
This was one of our biggest challenges. Initially, the game was introduced with sketch-style portrait art, but feedback indicated that it didn’t capture the characters' personalities well. We switched to a more stylized, animation-inspired art style, but the feedback showed that this change made the characters feel generic. After much consideration and effort, we decided to revert to the original art style.
Fans of both the original Lost Eidolons and Veil of the Witch told us that the characters that appear in both games fits better with the previous art style, and this feedback was crucial in making this decision. However, this does not mean we've simply reverted to the original illustrations and we’ll still be working on improving the faces of less distinctive characters. For example, we will make additional changes to the main character Ashe, so please keep this in mind when providing feedback.

In this demo, we also added unique character portrait art that appears when Mythic skills are used, to increase the visual impact.

[New Title Art]
There's now a new title art to more accurately captures the full story and vision of the game, improving upon the previous design that focused too much on the characters and felt a bit plain

2. Things Not Yet Implemented

The most common feedback we received during the tests was about the Altar of Fire. The upgrade options were too simple and didn’t significantly impact the gameplay style. We are therefore currently in the process of completely revamping the Altar of Fire. Unfortunately, this wasn’t ready for this demo, as it requires a lot of UI/UX and balance testing, but we want to reassure you that we are working hard to reflect your feedback.

As for the BGM, not all tracks are completed yet. By the time of the Early Access launch, the music selection will be much more varied, and we will continue to add more to enhance the feeling of variety and depth of battles and events.

Lastly, while many of you requested voice acting, it won’t be available in Early Access. However, we do plan to include it in the final release, once all story elements and hidden content are added.

We are also working hard on localization to support a wide range of languages, and we will announce which languages will be included in Early Access soon.

3. Future Plans

Our main goal with this Turn-based RPG Fest demo is to gather feedback from gamers who love the genre as much as we do. So please try out the demo and share your feedback! CLICK TO TAKE SURVEY[forms.office.com]

Triple Expedition Wrap-Up: Gamescom, PAX West, and Demo

This year has been full of new feats, for both our team and Ashe’s crew. For us, we went to our first-ever Gamescom and then forged onward to Seattle for PAX West; for the game, it has been in closed beta and public demo, with Early Access coming in the near future.

The unprecedented triple expedition for us will soon be completed, with the demo closing at 3PM PT today (September 3rd). If you played the demo but haven’t filled out the feedback survey, please do so here[forms.office.com], as it will remain open for only a few more days. We are deeply grateful for all the feedback, both from new players as well as those who played the game before (including previous PAX events). We can never emphasize and thank you enough on how your feedback shapes our game.

If you visited our booth, you may also have talked to Jin Sang, our creative director!

For PAX, we also brought some goodies to share with you, per our tradition! This time it was a canvas tote with our studio logo. Instead of trying to remember all 3 game titles, you can just search for us (Ocean Drive Studio) to find all 3 games… and some more ;)

While our triple expedition ended, we are far from being done. We will be working hard to take your feedback, implement them in the game, and bring back a more exciting journey for you with Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch!

We’re coming to PAX West this year! We can’t wait for the opportunity to meet all of you.

We're bringing some amazing content from Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch to PAX where you’ll be able to try out the game. Swing by our Booth: 317 and join us for an amazing time! We’ll also be bringing free swag so don't miss out!
