SH3 with GWX crashes to desktop in Linux
Hi!

I’m trying to play SH3 with GWX mod in Linux (EndeavourOS) with Proton Experimental. I followed this guide for GWX 3.0 step by step to install the 4gb patch, GWX 3.0, and Ahnenerbe widescreen mod: https://gtm.you1.cn/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1803072674. Installing all of them worked fine.

The game can be launched without issues, depending on whether or not I have the widescreen mod activated, I see either its splash screen in native resolution (1920x1080) or GWX’s one (1024x768-ish). Once in game, I can start training missions as well as custom missions, although loading custom missions comes to a rest at 90 % for some time.

Trying to launch a patrol in campaign mode will cause the loading screen to proceed to 90 %, stay there for ~30 seconds, then crash to desktop. This is true with and without widescreen mod. This doesn’t happen without mods after a clean installation.

So far I tried the following to fix the game crashing:

  1. Deleting any content in ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/15210/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/SH3/
  2. Running Wine in compatibility mode (Win XP and Win 7)

Step 1 was a recommendation I found here and there as an allround fix for this issue, although discussions were usually about Windows-based installations.
Step 2 came to mind after
WINEPREFIX="/home/whatever/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/15210/pfx" winecfg # libraries / add / d3d9 --> native,builtin # libraries / add / msvcr71 / native,builtin
from the aforementioned guide opened the dialog window allowing me to modify libraries and activate compatibility mode.

Does anyone have an idea what I can try to fix this problem?

Hey, I got it to load and play fairly well in a career patrol (fairly well because I had a few crashes to desktop, but I also saved the game nearby other ships which Ive seen mentioned is not a good idea with SH3). What I did is use proton 6.3-8. I'll give the compatibility mode command you mentioned a try if I have another CTD, as I started a new career and will be trying it out again. I also noticed that my crashes were when entering or while inside the straight of dover (my first patrol sent me through there), so it might be an issue with memory when getting near land.
