Workshop?
Will this game ever be open to the workshop/mods? The game is fantastic as it is, but it would be cool to see some fan takes on editing the game, adding new content, etc.

I'll leave my previous replies in tact, where mod support was being toyed around with along the way, but will now provide an update on the current state of mod support.

The focus these last 3 years has been on adding to the existing game, expanding the content while polishing what is already there. By the time the game had a large enough audience to warrant integrated mod support, it was effectively too late to layer that flexibility into the code. Nearly everything would have to be redone from scratch...

Now that the final update is out, the priority is pursuing console ports! That has already been in the works for many months now, and is no small task. Further optimizing and reworking the game to meet those separate hardware specs takes time and effort - with none of it making mod support any easier.

"Never say never" and all that. But after years of effort building up the game to where it is now, it'd likely be easier to build a new game than to rebuild Dead Estate. The team is looking forward to working on new projects. So the current plan is to wrap up production with the console ports (those details are still TBA, as the work continues) then lay Dead Estate to rest.

We're sorry to disappoint. But I think anyone reading this will understand what a difficult endeavour mod support is, and why a development cutoff needs to be made. Thank you for all the support you've shown over the years. And we hope you enjoy any future Milkbar Lads games just as much!

Modding
Would mods ever be in the question of new content by players? Or would you not want mods for your game, little quality improvement mods, although some players might want something different....

We have no opposition to modding, but the game wasn't initially built with it in mind.
It is unfortunately incredibly unlikely we'll be able to add true Workshop support at this stage. But never say never!

That's the dream! Keep in mind the game was originally built as a browser game, so something like this was not considered. We'd LOVE to implement Workshop support, but it may require massively altering the game under the hood to get that working properly. In the meantime we'll continue working on a new content update, and will be exploring this more longterm!

Steam Workshop
Are there any plans about making the game moddeable? It would be pretty neat to have custom characters or weapons/items.

Unfortunately there is no steam workshop in the game. But it would be nice if someone created a support workshop.

this game would really benefit from a workshop, yeah. and with the devs paying artists to make the trading cards for them, it would definitely be in the spirit of community content.

It's a bigtime, endgame goal for us!
But it may require reworking large parts of the game, and is something we feel should came after we feel we've finishing sticking our own hands into the dough!
It'd be risky to rework things to make room for the workshop, then add to the game in some way that requires redoing it multiple times. It's a very real concern with a smaller team!

But believe me. As soon as we feel we're able, we'd love to explore this option further! I can't make any promises though.

sounds good to me, and that's a good plan honestly. when nicalis allowed binding of isaac mods before it was done ended up making things really messy, so i'm actually glad you're waiting until you're done before making a workshop for the game.

We don't have any official mod support at this time.
We'd love to support that potential community. Hopefully we can build the game out to a place where that is more easily integrated. But currently, I imagine it'd be quite the effort to get any mods properly loaded and working

Steam Workshop? Please?
So, I came back playing Dead Estate thanks to the roadmap (very cool updates so far, can't wait for more), but that got me thinking - is there be a possibility for a functioning Steam Workshop in a future update? It would bring a longer liveability to the game, although I don't know if it would be hard for devs to implement it.

I'd assume if they were to add mod support they'd do it after all their planned updates.

Is there any plans to make this game mod compatible
I am just curious. Its not like every game needs mod compatibility.

Merging these topics got a little messy, and now many of the posts are no longer in chronological order. Sorry about that! Usually topic merging works more cleanly than this. Since this is such a common question, I thought it'd be best to have the discussion consolidated.
