New engine features for mappers to use
GZDoom adds loads of engine features like 3D floors, transparent water, etc. ROTT:LE will be the definitive version of ROTT for all time most likely, it should receive similar upgrades to boost longevity with the mapping scene. I know it's just KEX underneath it and technically it could be made to do anything, but I feel there are some modest improvements that would stay in line with the original engine's aesthetic.

Someone else mentioned a cut rain effect. I'd like to suggest the ability to vary floor/ceiling textures on a per-tile basis, with different footstep sounds depending on texture. This would permit levels to have a lot more visual variety. Indoor levels could have skylights. Outdoor levels could have overhead structures. City levels could have streets and sidewalks, with sprite based street lamps.

This goes hand in hand with the suggestion for custom asset pack support, but I already suggested that in another thread.

Custom assets would lead to both good and bad. A high quality map pack with good art now and then, but probably also bunches of dumb meme levels with Shrek wallpapers.

Sh*tpost maps are a feature not a bug. ROTT is a glorious sh*tpost of a game as is. Besides, ROTT textures all being 64*64 pixel squares should make it pretty simple to produce good looking textures.

KEX is only being used as a container similar to Docker, so you are actually limited to what the original raycasting engine this source port is based of can do short of doing a complete 3D overhaul like WinROTTgl, though a lot of your suggestions do seem feasible

Yeah, while I'm not the biggest fan of joke mods for really any game (gets old really fast) I wasn't really complaining as much as making the observation that that's where it would lead. I guess I would play a high effort sh*tpost episode.
