In my opinion, visual elements is addition to the game that a lot of people like, especially younger audience. To me it makes sense that the developers are moving towards that aspect of the game. Perhaps making money off visual elements allows developers to give more free goodies to the players, such as free premium tanks, days of premium account, etc. 5 years ago it was impossible to see a free premium tank be given (reminder we had 2 years in a row a free tank from mirny 13 event), or a free xmas or event box.
It's all about balance between things
