When I got to the second leg of the trip all of my upgrades have disappeared - is this intentional, or a bug? Having to completely restart my upgrades after each leg seems like it would get frustrating super-quickly.

As mentioned above, the game is way too dark in the houses while searching. No big deal, if there was not a point when it suddenly everything was great (the light). Bug?
