Follow button magic speed
If you give a plane the command to FOLLOW an enemy plane, it will catch up with it, even if the plane of this type does not have enough speed for this.

If you use one plane as bait, the second one will shoot down the entire column of enemy planes with impunity, having attached itself to it from behind.

Another advantage of "Follow" vs. "Attack".

Attack mode automatically switches game to x1 speed.
Follow mode allows you to chase planes* at x5 speed.

* Escaping planes, not attacking at the moment.

As far as I know, the Follow is for your own units .....

I once used this trick to outrun enemy fighters longer. I ordered my bombers to follow the ones flying far ahead. And they sped up a bit.
