First of all, the setting and enemies.
This game was based around classic monsters with an RE twist, something clearly to see with the first enemies, the Lycans. Obviously based around Werewolfs. And next in castle Dimitrescu, wich of course, is a castle, and its no hard to see the Dimitrescu and those other enemies are clearly based on Vampires.
Now I have no idea if Moreau is based on something, but it certainly keeps that vibe.
The Beneviento house of course is somehow different but keeps some relativeness to the same thing. It doesn't has classic monsters but it certainly has a classic horror trope, Dolls.
Wich isn't really the main focus of our time in the house, that would be of course, the giant fetus that traumatized everyone.
I'd say the Beneviento house is more based around other horror games like Silent Hill in how the enemy is designed, and how the puzzles are designed, considering its all based around Ethan's story and fears. As well as other games like Outlast, considering we do not have weapons or resources so we just can run and hide in lockers.
Finally with Heisenberg and the factory, I'd say this is the most original and as well most "Resident Evil" section of the game. Heisenberg's design and powers are clearly very unique in the franchise, considering he's basicly Magneto from X-men.
And the factory section I'd say is the one that feels most like Resident evil to me. Considering how travelling from point A to point B, then to Point B back to point A happens a lot in here, as well as the enemies we have here wich in design are unique but in gameplay are really no different from the average resident evil enemy. Has a weak point but is strong af. Also I felt like managing resources was something more frequent in this section than in others, plus how we travel through it, using an elevator to go through many levels.
Now overall this all doesn't feel very much like Resident evil you might say, the atmosphere can feel very different here, but I'd actually say that not only it IS Resident Evil but its the most unique one out there and that's not bad.
First let's have a summary of all mainline Resident Evil games in terms of atmosphere and setting.
RE1: A mansion in the forest with a lab underground, Resident Evil at its finiest of course, its the first game and it instantly got its identity here.
RE2: Most of the time RPD, the sewers and a lab underground as well, with some RC sections. Its obviously all classic Resident evil considering its also part of the og trilogy
RE3: Not so different to RE2 with the difference its most of the time on the actual Racoon City and completely exploring the zombie outbreak of it. Again nothing different and still very classic, and well as I said its THE zombie outbreak of the franchise set in THE Racoon City, I'd actually say its next to RE1 the most classic atmosphere.
RE4: Now a really big change on this, no longer in America but in Spain. We go through a Village, a Castle and an Island filled with more sophisticated technology in contrast to the previous section, this one doing the same purpose as the labs at the end of the previous Resident Evils. The atmosphere here is indeed way more different to the previous one, but it is not bad in this case considering it gave a fresh air to the franchise.
RE5: Now in a way more different atmosphere, we are in Affrica, wich is a really different setting. The infected town and the wild places have really different atmosphere than previous game, this game does have a soul of its own in this, but it certainly didn't feel to much like Resident evil until I'd say the last chapers of the game in the sections of this game that yet again work like the lab section or the more industrialized section all previous games had.
RE6: I have actually not finished or played a lot this game so maybe there goes all my authority in the subject, but what I will say is that its yet again another zombie outbreak very similar to Racoon City and overall it certainly feels more Resident Evil in terms of atmosphere and setting. But I'd say that may be what also makes it forgettable since it doesn't feel unique, now as I said I never finished it so I may be wrong about that.
RE7: The franchise completely got a return to the survival horror in this game, no debate about that.
The setting is somewhat inspired by RE1 (Old house in a natural enviroment, this time being in Lousiana so it certainly is somewhat different, and a Boat again being like the lab or industrialized section all games have) but it certainly has its own identity and soul, also being inspired by some Horror movies, old a new ones, such like Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with also a little of Blair's witch project.
And now we get to RE Village, wich I just said all about it before.
Now its not hard to see that RE Village does follow the main structure of all Resident Evi games, Old place/place in its natural state but infected by any kind of virus and enemies, maybe other place like this but different, and a industrialzied place at the end that contrast with the previous sections.
And while it does have a very different soul with the enemies, they are still Resident evil enemies, product of biological alterations.
Now Resident Evil Village DOES have a soul and it IS Resident Evil even if it may be differ with how some enemies are and some sections in the game.
Also I'd like to mention how Village tried to be somewhat like the beloved RE4 with how actually similar it is to it.
Starts in a village, then castle, then industry, just like RE4
Has a Merchant and things to sell
Has a briefcase type of Inventory
And the story is about an american in europe trying to save a young girl
You may say that RE Village tried to do what RE4 did back in its time and it didn't work the same
Moreau was a combination of Mermaids and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. The P.T house with the Chucky Dolls was taken directly from the scrapped RE4 with the reason being it was impossible for Leon receive physical wounds or die from drug induced delusions - ironically they forgot all about that and had Ethan receiving physical wounds - and even dying - from drug induced delusions Of course this whole level was stolen from the excellent Baba Yaga DLC from Tombraider.
The fans complained that RE7 was "too scary" so Capcom deliberately changed Village to make it easier and more cartoonish - and that is how it lost the Resident Evil SOUL.
If they had left Village alone to be what it was being developed to be then it would have been a very different experience.
This argument don't make much sense to me considering RE7 is by far the scariest entry in the series. You have to tone down a lot from RE7 to get to the level of the originals and I'd argue 8 is still somewhere between 7 and the originals in terms of scare factor meaning it's like the second scariest entry in the franchise. Capcom also never said anything about making it cartoonish nor easier. Those words come from your mouth.

This became a LOT more clear to me how much was missing with the ending.
Only THEN did I truly understand there is a LOT more to Resident Evil than Resident Evil 8 was letting on.
