So to answer your question, no they dont affect the ending.
They are Collectibles (for completionists)
all games with 'special' keybindings should be banned.
basically the story is the level up ...
If you don't gather all the collectibles you don't lose out on the story. You just don't know the full scope of it. If you don't want to take the time to gather collectibles well, why would you like to stop and read the lore that was tied to the collectible? You wouldn't. That is inconsistent.
Collectibles give rewards. They can be used to make you or your gear better.
Don't like it. Don't do it. You have the solution in your controller.

I would recommend checking out this guide as getting the best armor spans well, the whole game. There is one item you need which it parctically in a cutscene.
