Update to existing one OR totally separate game ?
Is it only an update if you already purchased the complete edition or totally a separate game?

Its been confirmed by a few people in one of the update threads that when you buy the update it gives you a completely different version to download that acts as its own title. So it is two separate games with separate installs.
