No, maybe you're just looking in the wrong place.

The majority of the players are playing on privately hosted sessions, that you won't be able to see unless you're on their friends list and get an invite. There are dedicated servers which might be free to join with any passwords, but that's only a fraction of the game sessions out there.

This is meant to be a co-op pve game you play with friends, not random people off the internet. It's not rust, or ark.

You may ask on the "Looking for Group" section for permission...

Yes completely dead nothing to see here except maybe the WEEKLY updates!!! That makes it completely dead. ROFL.
This is a SP player or Co-op with friends type game. This is not Ark where you go and raid people's bases when they are not online just for fun.
Still if you are so fast to say it is dead then yeah move along nothing to see game is dead.

imagine not doing research on how the co-op system works before buying..
So easy to call a game dead but impossible to do research beforehand..

Plenty of options, ask the steam forum, join discord and ask, use google or other search engines.

There are thousands of players, but you wont see them playing.
Its as someone else aready said.
90% of players are playing privetly or doing password locked dedicated servers
If you find a public server... yeah might aswell go play rust then..
