Extra life not working?

So I activated the assist mode and the extra life to avoid reperting a section 20 times, wich is not fun, but it doesnt work at all :\

You have to go to menu and select the level, every time, disaster design.
Anyway with the shield the game become what it was supposed to be, crazy it wasnt implemented from the begining, maybe in form of software power up.

So everytime you die you have to back out to the menu and select the level?
