Update from the studio

Hello friends,

It's been a while since we posted on We Are Legion: Rome's steam profile. This is due to several facts which we will lay down here.

First of all, as some of you may know, the development for the game is on hold since 2022, since our previous publisher descided to cancel the project. After we regained the sole ownership of the game our goal was and still is, to bring WAL to PC and give you, gamers, a kick-ass slaughter set in ancient Rome times.

For the last ten months we were solely focused on Bandit Simulator, our first FPP game project. The game went through quite a revolution since the begining of the development. We managed to ship a second demo for the last Octobers Steam Festival and provided several updates for the demo already. There is still some work in front of the team but we are closer to closure than ever before.

Our next goal is to secure a publishing deal for Bandit Simulator. Once this is done, we will gradually and consequently pick up We Are Legion: Rome 's development where we had left it back in April 2022.

We are a couple of months short of creating a vertical slice that would showcase what we mean by "kick ass slaughter". If you played Dishonored, God of War or Ghost Runner, you should have a an idea.

We are not going to create escuses for why the game is not here yet and why there was no posts from us. We were devoted to our other game project and as a small indie studio, we need to be smart and focus on sustaining ourselves before we jump all-in into further We Are Legion: Rome development.

The game's return is inevitable, as was Gauls defeat. ;-)

Apologies for no recent letters from the battlefield. Just like Ceasar in Alesia, we are focused on reaching our goals and eradicating nasty bugs.

Today we just want to reassure all of You that the game is still in development and share more goodies in the nearby future - like a little rendez-vous with this charming young man.

Devlog #11 "Sanguis"

"War, war never changes." There are those who win and those who lose. There are songs about the deeds of OUR brave heroes and scary lullabies about THEIR vile and murderous villains. Unquestionable truths better not to be questioned. Somewhere in the middle, a river of blood is continuously flowing.

They were the bad guys after all. Right?

From the beginning of the creation of We are Legion: Rome we knew what kind of tale we want to tell through our game. It won't be black and white. It won't be in shades of grey either.

The true colours of war are bloody dark red, muddy brown, and fiery orange. History is written by mighty fencers and woe to those who come between their blades.

When we are thinking about Gallic Wars, Gauls and Romans the vision of civilized, disciplined and educated Romans will most often appear in our minds together with an image of hairy and savage but brave image of Gauls.

We have no place in our game for similar pop culture over-simplifications.

We know that on both sides, no matter how nicely the armour of the soldiers gleamed or how well-spoken was the executioner holding the sword, the brutality fuels only more and more brutality.

Today we want to share some new screenshots, gifs and creation process videos.

Currently, we are focused on creating levels for our Battle Scenarios and gradually moving various mechanics, quests and graphics from prototype state to actual game.

Today we want to share some of our graphic artists' work in progress.

Do You remember our Centurion Armour concept art?

This is how it looks for now. It will be implemented into the game further in the development process.

Meanwhile, we are working on combat animations, balance and mechanics. As You can see, we want to have sword and board working together during the fight...

One might be discouraged by Mostly Negative reviews of Commander '85. It's a very niche and complex game with, quite frankly, TERRIBLE introduction and tutorial that led to Negative reviews bombing after 30 min of gameplay (30 min doesn't even cover the prologue part of the game). We strongly suggest checking the prologue first if You like its gameplay. It's free, unique, complex and fun, but it's clunky to dive in.

Right now we are on the verge of a big milestone in game production. We will share it in the next Devlog.

Devlog #7 We are Legion: Rome Creation Process Videos

In the last Devlog, we shared our idea for Battle Scenarios. Today we want to share actual game making process videos. Check out how we are making Gaul worthy of being conquered by Rome.

The first one is creating the Gaul Warrior concept art. By using reference, sketch and outline to the finished model.

The second video shows the process of creating a helmet model used by legion members with attention to detail, such as real battle damage or rust stains.

The third video shows the work of level design on shaping the camp, placing individual elements so that the whole is coherent, aesthetic and gives the impression of natural space.

The fourth video shows the work on the tower, which will be a vital element of the fortress that we will besiege.

Devlog #6 - Battle Scenarios

In the last Devlog, we were visiting Roman Camp. Today, WE are going to WAR.

The dense forest was the main theatre for battles during the Gallic Wars.

Battle Scenarios

Battle Scenario is where most of the game will happen. Here we will fight for the glory of Rome, Gaius Julius Caesar and our purse. We can start the Battle Scenario by talking to our commander in the Camp.

Battle Scenarios will be NOT replayable until the game ends. What happens in Gaul Forest stays in Gaul Forest.

When we finish the campaign, we can play any previous Battle Scenarios, possibly with an increased and/or customizable challenge level.

One Battle Scenario can be quite long. They are divided into stages and events and usually contain optional side missions alongside the main quest for a certain stage. We are planning to make a checkpoint based save system.

For example. The main mission is to fight Your way to the Gaul fortress through the forest. Side missions might be to find hidden troops in the forest and/or to loot local villagers resources.

Many of You have asked us if there will be choices to make during gameplay and the answer is Yes.
For example, it will be Your choice to either loot those villagers, kill them all or just let them escape.

We don't aim to make it overly complex as We are Legion: Rome is primarily an action game, but we want to make sure they noticeably matter for the story and game-ending (there will be more than one game ending).

We often come across obstacles, gates, etc. with which we will have to deal. We will also find appropriate tools for this, such as ballista and battering rams.

We divide Battle Scenarios into six modes:
- Classic Battle
- Siege - Attack
- City takeover
- Siege - Defence
- Retreat
- Chase

Those modes have a specific set of objectives required to win, and some of the mechanics are exclusive for a given mode.

Some of You have asked us about free building fortifications, siege machines etc. At first, we thought it might be a good idea, but ultimately we forfeit this for various good reasons.
(storywise, Kassius is not an engineer, but he might help engineers during the Battle as a soldier).

We are planning to create some barricade or local defence spots upgrades instead, but it's subject to be tested and discussed.

Gates are down! Guards are dead! Time to take what is Yours and cut any hands trying to hold it... or maybe not? Mirabella my dear...
Gameplay-wise we want to create challenging, fast-paced and diverse missions for players with a good story and many Gaul Warriors behind them. We are preparing a player skill-based fencing system to allow Kassius to cut through enemies with the Legionary style from Gaius Julius Caesar's favourite X Legion.

During Battle Scenarios, we will be able to do Cohort quests that are purely fight-based. If You are a member of a Cohort specialized in Gladius&Scutum, then expect challenges like "Do 10 perfect blocks" or "Decapitate 10 enemies with Gladius". Simple, but it's a fun addition to otherwise event-based main and side quests.
