i figured out, its happening with russian and german language. After setting the game to english language, saves and videos settings are working.

Let me guess, your windows user name is contains German characters?

Than that's strange. The issue was then you trying to launch the game on one language (game have localised folder in appdata) with the path on different language.
You can try to create folders manually:
1. Click Start, type %appdata% in search field, press Enter
2. Search for folder called "Games" there, open it
3. Create folders with the names:
"die spur der erwachten" for german
"Шерлок Холмс и секрет Ктулху. Золотое издание" for russian
4. Try to change locale on Steam and run the game

oh, thx, i might try to creat the russian folder. The english is already existing, and they saves are working!

so, for a reson, the german version, created that die spur des erwachten by itself, ive added samegame there from english loc, and it works. Creating "Шерлок Холмс и секрет Ктулху. Золотое издание" did't help at all.

Just checked with russian language - the folder name is correct. Did you try to disable your antivirus (or firewall) with deep filesystem protection module? Some antiviruses don't allow the game to create something on system drive even in %appdata% which must be allowed for every program to write there.

I have the same problem. Setting always return to default, impossible to play using high level graphics. English version works smoothly, but russian return to default. I bought the game for my wife, but because this problem the game remain useless.
Just now tryed all you suggestions - not works..

thx, it helped! Was set to german. after ive changed to russian and rebooted, now its working!

I have a similar problem, my game saves properly but everytime I switch the graphics to maximum I close the game and play the game again and the graphics' settings goes back to default.

Also helped to change to Ukrainian as default locale for non-unicode programs.
*I guess any of cyrillic language would help (if you use russian version of "Awakened").
