I also had an issue with the ramp on this game up front. In the story mode, I had to go on easy... The issue is that the attacks chain super well, and it's frustrating to not have an easy way to recover when your opponent is laying into you. Also though, at least in story mode, I noticed that often I had multiple power bars to roll through, so some fights felt like I was getting obliterated when really I had 3x or 4x health bars and the enemies would have 2x or less.
Most characters have combos laid out the same way too, so from a gameplay perspective, once you spend enough time training and getting used to how specials work alongside other combos.. it gets a lot easier regardless of what fighter you're using.
