I really don't think its that deep. I see it all the time nowadays, developers creating passion projects and people like to come out in droves to hold them to whatever standards seem fit at the time. I don't need to know the history, I buy the game, and if I enjoy it I enjoy it. I played this, and I enjoyed it, and that's as simple as it needs to be for me. Speaking of the history, I have seen YouTube videos stoking the drama and controversy, and honestly it just seems so overblown it's unreal.
They created drama for clicks and views at my expense. Hate sells and it sells more than praise.
Most of the "hate" comes from the devs making promises they couldn't keep. When you're promised something akin to The Isle Legacy (Not Evirma) and you get the concept of a game with unity store bought assets, you can see where the animosity comes from.
But that's just the take of someone who's pre-ordered the game. Though I will say I'm happy it's at least still being worked on.
Hoping this doesn't end up being a YanDev situation though.
Animal survival games, ESPECIALLY the dinosaur survival ones (not naming any) are notoriously bad and have a negative reputation, most of the time its due to the toxic communities these kinds of games tend to attract, but it also be due to unfair game mechanics, bugs, lack of interesting gameplay, or being stuck in early access for unreasonable amounts of time. Sometimes it is also due to an unprofessional development team(which I have encountered more often than not with these types of games), but i don't think Day of Dragons suffers from that though.
The point Im trying to make here is that, animal survival games already have a bad reputation, so its hard for a well made game in the same subgenre like Day of Dragons to gain footing. Honestly I hope it succeeds and I hope that new features get added soon.
This is why I never trust most youtubers in general. Had a former friend who was a youtuber. They were more interested in how many views they were getting and how much money they were making off of it than our friendship. Not to get off topic, but Youtube has become a monetized hellscape, it was way better back in the early 2010's when ppl made youtube videos for fun instead of money, so its no surprise that they will take videogame drama and blow it out of proportion in order to milk as much money out of it as possible.
Edit:
I redownloaded it and I must admit I quite enjoy it. Although living in South Africa, the ping is really bad.
