Arma 3
What the f*ck is wrong with controller mapping in this game??
A little venting to start, but looking for genuine help...

How the hell can this game be so terrible in basic controller functionality? Even for a 2013 release this is basically broken. How has Bohemia not put in any effort or thought (sorry to sound overly critical, but it's that bad) as to have such an inconsistent, borderline broken, controller functionality? It would be fine if I could simply map buttons, like any other damn PC game, but it's not that simple. I have 7 hours in this game and they've all been terrible. I thought I had the mapping system down, only to turn on the game today, "Enable" the right controller, and find that none of my mappings work, despite the game still listing them (not grayed out either).

Does anyone know of any fixes or mods? I do believe this game has a lot to offer, and I'd really like to dig into it. But, and I hate saying this, the controller functionality seems thoughtless and poor representation of Bohemia's capabilities.

Please, please, PLEASE do not leave a snide comment about why I'm using a controller to play this game. I don't like mouse and keyboard. I'm playing single player only, so I'm fine with the limitations of a controller....as long as it works.

Arma 3 was never designed to be compatible with controllers. Hence why it doesn't work. It's a strict PC game, built for M&K and maybe HOTAS and TrackIR. I'm guessing you're coming from Reforger? Reforger is on a new engine, and is designed for both PC and Console. Arma 3 was designed strictly for PC. As for fixes, plenty of options available on the Bohemia forums and other websites. Or check on YouTube.
(Not intended to be a snide comment, just a blunt one)

I understand the intended use is M&K, but if controller support, or any feature, is in the game, it should be done competently. I've tried looking online already, haven't been able to find a consistent solution. Do you have a link to one you recommend?

I'm actually not coming from Reforger. This is my first Arma experience.

I came from console to Arma. Unfortunately I don't know of any tutorial or forum discussion off-hand that can explain how to make controller work with it. But it's easier to learn the game with M&K than controller. If I do find something, I'll link it to here though.

I have been able to get a controller to work, and I know others have as well.

What controller are you using? Do you have other controllers plugged in?
i have arma 3 fully mapped to my ps4 controller and i mean everything is bound when i hold a button the control scheme is changed and if hold select i toggle between land, sea, air modes and reason i use ps4 controller is the touch pad it can be used as a 2 way or 4 way button so major advantage over xbox. You can either fully map the game yourself like i did before steam api was even a thing or just download arma 3 ARMAgerd profile he is a youtuber that has put in alot of work to get arma working with controller and works very well

Thank you for the responses. I'll check these out.

Follow-up question: how do you hold a button to change the scheme?

Unlike reforged and the upcoming arma 4 hate to break it to you but 3 wasn’t really designed with controller in mind they never had any intent to make this a console game so it was at most a secondary feature. That being said try going into steam big picture mode it’s an entire separate mode of steam specifically for controller and TV usage and you can even download community layouts, I’m going to assume you own a modern controller (ps4 or it’s Xbox equivalent or newer) so steam big picture should be compatible with it. That being said I honestly think you should get a mouse and keyboard even something cheap there’s ultra bargain options available and not all games are compatible with controller even with fixes

DayZ wasn't designed with it in mind either, yet it functions decently well on console. Bohemia could very much push custom mapping to the game, they already have default profiles based on controller model, yet the game doesn't even register stick input correctly. It's baffling.

Arma 3 was NEVER designed with controllers in mind. And at this stage adding the compat will be impossible as they'd have to modify the entire engine. It's more likely better that they're working this problem into Arma Reforger and 4 instead. Wasting resources like that on 3 is pointless.

Again...the point being that DayZ is in the exact same boat. Neither's engine originally were designed with controllers in mind. Reiterating it doesn't exactly change that. DayZ is based on the Arma 3 engine, given that it's a standalone form of an Arma 2 mod. Doesn't exactly track that they can somehow seemingly get controller support working well on that whilst Arma 3 lags behind. They both run on the Enfusion Engine. Engines utilize plugin functionality on a developer level. They very much could add support to Arma 3 without a major engine rework

They could, or they could work on Arma 4. But you can't get both. It's either Controller Support for Arma 3, or they work on making Arma 4 in time for the planned release. We both know where they've put their efforts in that regard. So don't expect them to rework their Engine to make Controller Support for a game that is over 12 years old.
DayZ Standalone's Engine has been getting constant updates, over the years, to fit the new engine that Reforger and soon A4 will have. While A3 has only been getting optimization.

"They very much could add support to Arma 3"...They could but they won't. Not when the priority is on the development of A4.
