https://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2020/01/17/dragon-quest-builders-2-producer-working-on-a-different-new-game/
They announced Dragon Quest Eraser (a puyo-puyo like mobile game), Dragon Quest X Online chapters 5.5 and 6 (Japan-only), Dragon Quest X Offline (a single-player DQX), Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Dragon Quest Treasures (of similar vein as the Monsters series), and Dragon Quest XII. Any of these might be the different game referred to in the article (as could any other SquareEnix property.)
Clearly DQB3 (or any other DQ game) would not release close to DQ12's release date. And if DQB3 is to be based on the DQ3 storyline, its unlikely to be released too closely to the HD-2D remake either, for the sake of not having Zoma and Baramos as the big baddies in games too closely released to one another. We don't know when either game will be released yet, only that both are expected in the next eleven and a half months or so, but I think its reasonable guess that we won't see a DQB3 until Q1 2023 at earliest. The hope going into the presentation was that we'd see DQB3 very late this year (Decemberish) or early next year with DQ12 several months later (early Summer). This timeframe now appears taken by DQ10 Offline, assuming it even comes to the west.
If the same producer and development crew is involved in both one of those six games and will be working on DQB3, then let's hope they had either Eraser or Treasures, because they are furthest along, or DQ 3 HD-2D, as its won't require as much localization (having been translated already.) The DQ 10 and 12 games would be laborious efforts that would mean DQB3 development is still in its infancy, if started at all. If they're working on non-Dragon Quest stuff, then who the hell knows where they may be progress-wise.
Possibly confusing it with DQB1, which finally got a PC/Steam port in February.
** 2025? lol
Right now we're crossing fingers for 2025. DQ12 is expected in 2026, and we know DQ3 HD-2D is this November, with DQ 1+2 HD-2D arriving 2025. DQ Team aims for at least two major Japanese releases a year. 2024 gave us DQ X Online 7.0 and the upcoming DQ3 HD-2D, but no spinoff game - this is the first time there's been no spinoff since 2009; and first time without either a spinoff or new mainline since 1997. So there is high expectation that there must be a spinoff game in 2025 to maintain schedule, unless the financial situation is so dire that they can only afford to make the HD-2D and DQ12 games. (They did cancel a number of projects in the last year.) A late 2025 launch of DQ12 is also possible as the second release, but they haven't started sharing concept art or screenshots yet, which is something that started for DQ11 18-24 months before release. So 2026 seems much more likely.
We can rule out a couple of game types for any second 2025 title: DQ X Online 8.0 isn't arriving that quickly. We just saw a new Monsters game, so we won't see another right away. Some people have proposed a new Heroes game, but they just did Infinity Strash and Champions which have musou-like gameplay and both of them badly flopped. I've seen others say that the Rivals mobile card game could get a refresh, but the first game didn't sell well on Switch and card games sell poorly outside of Japan, which runs counter to SquareEnix's goal of better global brand recognition. They could do something entirely new like they did with Treasures, but that's quite risky and seems like the kind of project that would be more likely cancelled than pushed through to completion. This leaves a Builders spinoff as one of the few paths to success. And the with HD-2D reintroducing the DQ3 backstory, and assuming DQB3 would tie into the DQ3 story as DQB1 and DQB2 did, then the iron will be hot and players will be interested in moving from the mainline to its associated spinoff. Ultimately, if SquareEnix and Armor Project only have the time and money to do one spinoff game, you'd want it to be from a series that has sold well in the past, and has excellent potential to make a lot of money. Except for DQ12, DQB3 will sit right at the top of that list once DQ3 HD-2D launches.
